Shaheed Bhai Mani Singh Ji Gatka Akhara
We have all heard of kung-fu, taekwondo and other forms of martial arts. However, how many of us have heard of the weapons based martial art form called Gatka?
Gatka is an Indian martial art form. Shaheed Bhai Mani Singh Ji Gatka Akhara (Damdami Taksal) from UK, winner of the international Gatka competition, will be putting on two performances for the first time ever at Celebration Square in Mississauga. There will be a short demonstration on Friday Aug 17, 2012 at 6.30pm and a full-on exhibition at 4 pm on Sunday Aug 17, 2012.
Gatka is also known as the ‘weapons of mass protection’ martial art form because besides using bare hands it also teaches one to defend with sword, shield, dagger, javelin, bow and arrow, whip, chain and the magnificent chakram which is a circular edged weapon (see image).
As this is part of the premier annual and free multi-dimensional festival MOSAIC, there will be lots of other activities going on before and after these demonstrations. A panoply of food stalls with taste-bud tantalizing cuisines and a bazaar offering a mother lode of curios, knick-knacks, costume jewelry, clothes, henna and much much more will also be on hand.
We wish to see you all there. You will have a whale of a time and witness a new form of martial arts!
