Kundalini: Union of the Divine
Curated by Ali Adil Khan
Born in India and later emigrating to Europe and then Canada, Youngo Verma (1938 - 2015) created an extensive body of work that explores the notion of cosmic energy. How are cosmic energy and creativity related? What insight can be gained from an artist's interpretation of cosmological questions? Kundalini is a Sanskrit word describing one such form of energy that is channelled through the base of the spine, and it is said that the awakening of Kundalini through ritual and spiritual practice leads to the union of Will (sakti-kundalini), Knowledge (prana-kundalini) and Action (para-kundalini) - the Union of the Divine. Verma's drawings, paintings and sculptures explore the connections of these bodily, intellectual and spiritual energies in minimal, sensual forms.
